What is a Favicon? favicon.ico file

A favicon or Site Icon is short for favorites icon. It is an icon associated with a website to be displayed with bookmarks, in the URL bar, on tabs, and anywhere elsewhere to help identify a website visually. Favicon also known as a shortcut icon, Web site icon, tab icon or bookmark icon. Browsers that support a tabbed document interface typically show a page's favicon next to the page's title on the tab, and site-specific browsers use the favicon as a desktop icon. If a favicon.ico file is not provided, a browser will simply display a default webpage icon.

A favicon is typically a graphic image with 16 x 16 pixels square and is saved as favicon.ico in the root directory of the server. You can use a favicon with any website and blog on a web server that allows access to the root directories.
